Chapter 6

Absinth

There was so much to do. I’d never been busier in my life and I only had to deal with the females, mostly. Stan was also busy and he had a job to do every day. I think starting out, they planned to work through the weekends. Those who wanted off, could take it since he had dozens of wolves wanting to work.

He’d managed to find regular jobs for a couple of them, but that left a large number still wanting. Garth put four of the teenagers to work and was working through the furniture at an amazing pace. Stan promised not to throw any more ratty furniture away. A few pieces had only needed clean up. Now the challenge was how to sell them. I advertised some of them on a local radio station that had a free trader’s market.

Garth handled the sales, I left him with a spare cell phone. None of the pack had any kind of phone. Just one more thing to deal with. There was no internet and no cable either, even though the cable lines ran along the highway, a stone’s throw from the pack house.

I called and checked on getting cable. The fees to connect it along with the deposit were too much. The lady told me next month they were doing a can drive and I could get unlimited hookups in the house for free. I still had to pay the deposit and pick a plan. I picked a bundle with cable, phone, and internet. The charges on my internet hot spot were killing me.

She let me schedule the visit required and I promised to give the cable guy some cans for their drive. It just brought home the primitive state our pack had lived in. They didn’t even have the basic necessities, much less any luxuries like cable and so far, I’d been shocked not to find one book anywhere. The TV in the living room was Stan’s and the one in our bedroom and the small one in the kitchen were mine. The book shelf in the hallway? It was full of my books for anyone to borrow and return.

Today, I was spending the morning with Kristen and Liza. We were going to go over what her apartment needed and I planned to write out a list for it and one for each of their stores. The apartment first, because having someone live there would discourage theft or vandalism. I was glad Kristen planned to put her brother in the spare bedroom. She would have protection just in case and we would have one more pack member out of the tents.

We toured the building and it was basically sound. It needed mostly cosmetic work, other than a few windows that were broken. “How do you know so much about remodeling?” Kristen asked.

“I had a boyfriend that worked at a hardware store. He didn’t know shit, but a retired guy who worked with him knew everything. I worked on the rentals I lived in to try to make them livable.
